About Owl

How do owls fly so silently?

Owls have specialized feathers with soft, fringed edges and a velvety surface that breaks up air turbulence. Their wing feathers also have a unique comb-like structure that eliminates the whooshing sound other birds make, allowing them to surprise prey completely.

Can owls really turn their heads 360 degrees?

Owls cannot actually rotate their heads a full 360 degrees, but they can turn them up to 270 degrees in either direction. They have 14 neck vertebrae compared to humans' 7, plus special blood vessel adaptations that prevent cutting off circulation during extreme turns.

Why do owls have such large eyes?

Owl eyes are enormous relative to their skull size and contain millions more light-sensing cells than human eyes. Their tubular-shaped eyes cannot move in their sockets, which is why owls must turn their entire heads to look around. This gives them incredible night vision.

What do owls eat and how do they hunt?

Most owls are carnivorous, hunting small mammals like mice, rats, and rabbits, plus birds, insects, and fish. They swallow prey whole and later regurgitate pellets containing indigestible bones, fur, and feathers. Their asymmetrical ears help them locate prey by sound alone.

Where do owls build their nests?

Unlike many birds, most owl species do not build traditional nests. Instead, they use tree hollows, abandoned nests of other birds, cliff ledges, or even burrows in the ground. Burrowing owls actually live underground in prairie dog or ground squirrel tunnels.

How long do owls live in the wild?

Owl lifespans vary greatly by species. Small owls like screech owls typically live 4 to 8 years, while larger species like great horned owls can live 15 to 25 years in the wild. The oldest recorded wild owl was a great horned owl that lived 29 years.
