Arctic foxes inhabit the Arctic tundra, one of Earth's most extreme environments. They live across northern Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Alaska in areas with temperatures dropping below negative 50 degrees Fahrenheit. These foxes den in underground burrows or caves, often reusing abandoned dens. Their habitat includes sparse vegetation, frozen ground, and vast open spaces where they hunt for food year-round.

Arctic foxes are opportunistic carnivores with a diverse diet including lemmings, voles, birds, eggs, and fish. They use their excellent hearing to locate prey beneath the snow, then pounce with remarkable accuracy. Arctic foxes also follow polar bears to scavenge leftover kills. This varied diet helps them survive when specific prey becomes scarce during harsh winters.

Arctic foxes have multiple adaptations for extreme cold. Their fur is one of the warmest in the animal kingdom, with a thick undercoat that provides insulation. Their ears are small to reduce heat loss, and their feet have fur on the pads for traction and warmth. They also lower their metabolic rate during winter and curl into a tight ball, using their bushy tail like a blanket for extra warmth.

Most Arctic foxes undergo seasonal color changes, switching from a dark blue-brown coat in summer to pure white in winter. This transformation provides perfect camouflage in snow-covered landscapes, making them harder for both predators and prey to spot. Some Arctic foxes remain blue-gray year-round. These color changes happen gradually as old fur is shed and new fur grows in.

Arctic foxes are surprisingly small canines, weighing just 3.5 to 9 pounds and measuring 18 to 26 inches long, excluding their tail. Their compact size helps them conserve body heat and fit into small dens. In the wild, they typically live 5 to 7 years, though some reach 10 years. In captivity, they can live up to 14 years with proper care and nutrition.

Arctic foxes are mostly solitary but pair up during breeding season. They're monogamous and raise their kits together in dens. A single litter contains 5 to 8 kits born in spring. Both parents hunt and protect the young until autumn when kits become independent. Extended family members sometimes help care for kits, showing cooperative behavior rare among fox species.
