Wolves howl to communicate across long distances with their pack members. Each wolf has a unique howl that helps pack members recognize and locate one another. Howling also reinforces social bonds and territorial boundaries. Contrary to popular belief, wolves don't howl at the moon, but moonlit nights simply make it easier for us to hear them.

Wolves live in family groups called packs, typically led by a mother and father wolf called the alpha pair. The pack hunts large prey cooperatively, with each member playing an important role. This teamwork allows wolves to bring down animals much larger than themselves, like elk and moose. Packs can have 5 to 10 members on average.

Wolves are carnivores that hunt large hoofed animals like deer, elk, and bison. A wolf can eat up to 20 pounds of meat in one meal but may go days without eating. In the wild, wolves succeed in only about 1 out of 10 hunts, so they must be patient and persistent hunters working together as a team.

Gray wolves are the largest wild canines, weighing between 50 and 110 pounds depending on their location. Wolves in colder northern regions tend to be larger than those in southern areas. In the wild, wolves typically live 6 to 8 years, though some have been known to reach 13 years old in protected environments.

Wolves have incredible adaptations for survival, including powerful legs for running up to 40 miles per hour and thick fur that keeps them warm in harsh winter conditions. Their excellent sense of smell is about 100 times better than humans, helping them track prey. Sharp teeth and strong jaws allow them to bite with a force of nearly 400 pounds.

Gray wolves once roamed across much of the Northern Hemisphere, but today they live mainly in remote wilderness areas. You can find wolves in Canada, Alaska, Russia, Scandinavia, and parts of Eastern Europe. Some wolves also live in the western United States after successful reintroduction programs. They prefer forests, tundra, and grasslands away from human settlements.
