Despite their name, mini pigs typically weigh between 70-150 pounds when fully grown, much larger than many people expect. They can stand 14-20 inches tall and live 12-18 years, making them long-term companions that require significant space and commitment.

Mini pigs are omnivores that naturally forage for roots, fruits, vegetables, and small insects. As pets, they need specially formulated pig feed, fresh vegetables, and limited treats. They should never eat chocolate, onions, or high-salt foods which can be dangerous.

Mini pigs rank as the fourth most intelligent animal species, surpassing dogs and most primates. They can learn complex tricks, solve puzzles, open doors, and even play video games using joysticks. Some can learn over 100 different commands and words.

Mini pigs were first developed in the 1960s for medical research, bred from small pig breeds from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. The most common breeds include Vietnamese Pot-Bellied pigs, Kunekune pigs, and Juliana pigs, each with distinct characteristics.

Mini pigs can be wonderful pets for dedicated families, but they require special care, outdoor space, and are illegal in many cities. They're social animals that need companionship, can become destructive when bored, and require veterinary care from exotic animal specialists.

Mini pigs communicate through various grunts, squeals, and body language. They make different sounds for happiness, hunger, fear, or excitement. They can also learn to respond to human verbal commands and often develop strong bonds with their human families.
