Cowboys were primarily cattle herders who drove large herds across hundreds of miles to railroads for shipping. They worked 14-hour days, earned about $30 per month, and spent months on dangerous cattle drives facing stampedes, river crossings, and harsh weather conditions.

The peak cowboy era lasted only about 20 years, from 1866 to 1886. This period saw massive cattle drives from Texas to Kansas railheads, but it ended when railroads expanded and barbed wire fencing divided the open range.

Cowboys carried a lariat (lasso), pocket knife, bedroll, and often a revolver for protection. Their most important tool was their saddle, which could cost three months' wages and served as pillow, chair, and workbench on the trail.

Dime novels and Wild West shows in the late 1800s romanticized cowboy life, creating legendary figures like Pecos Bill. These stories exaggerated their adventures, turning ordinary ranch hands into larger-than-life heroes who could lasso tornadoes and ride wild mustangs.

The unwritten cowboy code emphasized loyalty to the brand they worked for, protecting women and children, keeping promises, and sharing resources with fellow travelers. This moral code became central to cowboy legends and Western folklore traditions.

Cowboys used hand signals, mirror flashes, smoke signals, and distinctive whistle patterns to communicate across vast distances. They also developed a unique vocabulary of cattle-driving terms that became part of American Western folklore and language.
