What were Valkyries in Norse mythology?

What did Valkyries look like?
Valkyries were typically depicted as beautiful, powerful women wearing gleaming armor and helmets. They often had large feathered wings and carried spears or swords, riding magnificent winged horses called Sleipnir through the sky.
What was a Valkyrie's main job?

How many Valkyries were there?
