Mariachi originated in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, around the 18th century, blending Spanish and indigenous Mexican musical traditions. The name itself has debated origins, possibly from French 'mariage' (marriage) or a local indigenous word. Today, Mariachi is UNESCO-recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

A traditional Mariachi band includes violins, trumpets, vihuela (a small guitar), guitarron (large bass guitar), and sometimes harp. Each instrument plays a specific role: violins carry melodies, trumpets add brightness and drama, and the guitarron provides deep bass lines that make people want to dance and celebrate.

Mariachi suits, called 'trajes de charro,' are inspired by traditional Mexican charro (cowboy) clothing from rural areas. The elaborate decorations, embroidery, silver buttons, and vibrant colors reflect pride in Mexican heritage and create a visual spectacle that matches the music's emotional energy and celebration.

Mariachi bands perform at weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and cultural celebrations throughout Mexico and Latino communities worldwide. They're often hired as surprises for special people, serenading them with romantic or celebratory songs. Some families have Mariachi perform at quinceañeras and religious festivals.

While Mariachi started in rural Jalisco, it moved to cities and became increasingly refined and professional during the 20th century. Modern Mariachi blends traditional instruments with contemporary songs, appearing in movies, television, and concert halls worldwide. Yet it maintains its emotional connection to Mexican identity and family values.

Traditionally, Mariachi was exclusively male, but this changed significantly in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, women Mariachi musicians are celebrated performers and leaders, with all-female and mixed-gender ensembles gaining international recognition and Grammy Awards, breaking historic barriers and expanding the tradition's future.
