Where did the Athenian Assembly meet?

The Assembly met on a hill called the Pnyx, located west of the Acropolis in Athens. This outdoor amphitheater could hold up to 6,000 citizens and provided excellent acoustics for speakers addressing the crowd.

Who could participate in Athenian democracy?

Only adult male citizens over 18 could participate, which excluded women, slaves, and foreigners. This represented only about 10-20% of Athens' total population, making it quite different from modern democracies.

How often did the Athenian Assembly meet?

The Assembly met about 40 times per year, roughly once every nine days. Citizens were expected to attend regularly, and later in Athens' history, they were even paid a small wage for participation.

What issues did the Assembly vote on?

The Assembly decided on war and peace, passed laws, elected officials, controlled finances, and could even banish dangerous politicians through a process called ostracism, where citizens voted using broken pottery pieces.

How did voting work in the Assembly?

Citizens voted by raising their hands, and officials counted the hands to determine the majority. For some decisions, they used colored stones or pottery shards dropped into urns for secret ballots.

What was the role of the speaker's platform?

The bema was a raised stone platform where citizens gave speeches to the Assembly. Anyone could speak, but they wore a myrtle wreath while speaking and faced severe penalties for lying or misleading the people.
