A complete journey along the Silk Road could take anywhere from one to three years! Most merchants didn't travel the entire route, instead trading goods at various stops along the way, passing items from trader to trader across continents.

While silk was famous, merchants also traded spices, precious stones, gold, ivory, tea, porcelain, horses, and even exotic animals like peacocks. Ideas, religions, technologies, and diseases also spread along these ancient trade routes.

Oases provided life-saving water, food, and shelter in harsh desert conditions. They became bustling trade centers where merchants rested, resupplied, repaired equipment, and exchanged goods. Many oases grew into wealthy cities due to Silk Road trade.

Camels were the most important pack animals because they could survive long periods without water and carry heavy loads. Merchants also used horses, donkeys, yaks in mountainous regions, and sometimes elephants for particularly valuable cargo.

Silk Road merchants relied on experienced guides, followed ancient routes marked by landmarks, used the stars for navigation, and traveled in large groups called caravans for safety. They also followed chains of oases across deserts.

The Silk Road gradually declined after the 15th century when sea routes became more popular and safer. The rise of ocean shipping, political changes, and the Ottoman Empire's control over land routes contributed to its eventual abandonment.
