Ashoka ruled the Mauryan Empire from approximately 268 to 232 BCE, over 2,000 years ago. He lived during ancient India's golden age and controlled territory from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, making his empire one of the largest in Indian history.

The Battle of Kalinga in 261 BCE was incredibly brutal, with over 100,000 soldiers killed and 150,000 people displaced. The massive bloodshed horrified Ashoka so deeply that he completely changed from a violent conqueror to a peaceful Buddhist ruler dedicated to non-violence.
