Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire around 321 BCE when he was just in his twenties. Amazingly, he built one of history's largest empires while still a young man, showing incredible military and political genius at such an early age.

Chandragupta rose from humble origins with help from his mentor Chanakya, a brilliant political strategist. Together they built a massive army, formed clever alliances, and used spy networks to overthrow the corrupt Nanda dynasty and establish Mauryan rule.

The Mauryan Empire stretched over 2 million square miles, covering most of modern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Afghanistan. It was larger than any previous Indian empire and housed nearly 50 million people at its peak.

Chandragupta created an efficient government system with excellent roads, a postal service, and strong military organization. He promoted trade, built irrigation systems, and established a vast spy network that helped maintain peace and order throughout his enormous empire.

Chanakya, also known as Kautilya, was Chandragupta's mentor and chief advisor. This brilliant political scientist wrote the famous Arthashastra, a guide on governance and strategy that helped shape the empire's administrative and military systems.

After ruling for 24 years, Chandragupta surprisingly gave up his throne around 297 BCE to become a Jain monk. He spent his final years practicing meditation and fasting, eventually dying through voluntary starvation as part of Jain religious practice.
