Charlemagne was crowned on Christmas Day, December 25, 800 AD, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Surprisingly, historical accounts suggest he may not have expected the coronation that day and was caught off guard by Pope Leo III's actions.

His coronation revived the concept of a Western Roman Empire after 300 years. It created the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted over 1,000 years, and established the precedent of papal authority in crowning emperors, fundamentally changing European politics.

Charlemagne's empire stretched across modern-day France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, and parts of Spain and Austria. His kingdom was larger than any European realm since the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.

He launched the Carolingian Renaissance, establishing schools, preserving classical texts, and promoting literacy. His palace school attracted scholars from across Europe, and he standardized writing with Carolingian minuscule script, which influenced modern lowercase letters.

Charlemagne protected Pope Leo III from Roman nobles who opposed him. In gratitude, Leo crowned Charlemagne emperor, creating a powerful church-state alliance. However, Charlemagne later controlled many church affairs, sometimes conflicting with papal authority.

His empire was divided among his grandsons in 843 AD through the Treaty of Verdun. This split created the foundations of modern France, Germany, and Italy, fundamentally shaping the political map of medieval Europe for centuries.
