Charles V lived from 1500 to 1558 and ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 to 1556. He became King of Spain at just 16 years old and later inherited the title of Holy Roman Emperor, making him one of the youngest rulers of such vast territories in European history.

Charles V inherited territories from four different royal bloodlines, creating an empire so vast that people said 'the sun never sets on Charles's empire.' He controlled Spain, the Netherlands, parts of Italy, Austria, Germany, and Spanish colonies in the Americas, making him incredibly wealthy and influential.

Charles V battled constant wars with France, dealt with the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther, and fought against Ottoman Turkish invasions. He also had to manage rebellions in his territories and balance the interests of many different cultures and languages within his empire.

In 1556, Charles V made the surprising decision to abdicate (give up) his throne and retire to a monastery in Spain. He split his vast empire between his son Philip II, who got Spain and its colonies, and his brother Ferdinand, who received Austria and the Holy Roman Empire title.

Under Charles V's rule, Spanish conquistadors like Cortés conquered the Aztec Empire and Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire. The gold and silver that flowed from these American colonies made Charles V one of the wealthiest rulers in history and funded his many European wars.

Charles V strongly opposed Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, seeing it as a threat to both his Catholic faith and political unity. He spent much of his reign trying to stop the spread of Protestantism, but ultimately failed to prevent Christianity from permanently splitting.
