Huayna Capac ruled from approximately 1493 to 1525 CE, during the final decades before Spanish conquest. Remarkably, he died from smallpox, a European disease that reached South America even before the conquistadors arrived in his territory.

Under his rule, the empire stretched over 2,500 miles from north to south, covering parts of six modern countries. It was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America, ruling over 12 million people through an incredibly efficient administrative system.

He conquered northern territories including parts of Ecuador and Colombia, built magnificent palaces and fortresses, and strengthened the empire's famous road system. His military campaigns extended Inca influence to its furthest reach in history.

He successfully balanced military conquest with skilled diplomacy, often incorporating defeated peoples into the empire peacefully. His administrative genius kept diverse cultures united under Inca rule while respecting local traditions and customs.

His death triggered a devastating civil war between his sons Huascar and Atahualpa, who fought for control of the empire. This conflict fatally weakened the Inca Empire just as Spanish conquistadors arrived in South America.

He used the empire's incredible road network, efficient messenger system, and strategic placement of governors throughout the territory. The Inca also relocated populations and required local nobility to send their children to Cusco for education.
