Mehmed II conquered Constantinople on May 29, 1453, after a 53-day siege. He was only 21 years old when he achieved what many considered impossible: breaking through the city's legendary walls that had protected it for over 1,000 years.

Constantinople controlled the vital trade route between Europe and Asia, making it incredibly wealthy and strategically important. Its conquest ended the 1,000-year Byzantine Empire and established the Ottoman Empire as a major world power spanning three continents.

Mehmed used massive cannons, including the famous 'Basilica' cannon that could fire 600-pound stone balls. He also transported ships overland to bypass the city's chain barrier, surprising the defenders with attacks from unexpected directions.

Mehmed renamed the city Istanbul and made it the Ottoman capital. He transformed the great cathedral Hagia Sophia into a mosque and rebuilt the city, welcoming people of different religions and backgrounds to repopulate it.

Beyond Constantinople, Mehmed conquered over 25 cities and expanded Ottoman territory significantly. However, taking Constantinople was his greatest achievement because the city had resisted sieges for centuries and was considered nearly impossible to capture.

The city was protected by massive walls up to 40 feet high and 15 feet thick, plus a natural harbor barrier made of heavy chains. These defenses had successfully repelled attacks for over 800 years before Mehmed's innovative siege tactics finally broke through.
