Suleiman ruled from 1520 to 1566, making his 46-year reign the longest in Ottoman history. He became sultan at age 26 and transformed his empire into a global superpower that controlled vast territories across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Europeans called him 'the Magnificent' for his incredible military victories and cultural achievements. However, his own people knew him as 'Kanuni,' meaning 'the Lawgiver,' because he created a comprehensive legal system that governed the empire for centuries.

Suleiman's court in Topkapi Palace was incredibly luxurious, with hundreds of servants, elaborate ceremonies, and strict protocols. The sultan wore robes decorated with gold thread and precious gems, while courtiers competed for his attention through poetry, art, and scholarship.

Suleiman conquered Belgrade, Rhodes, and much of Hungary, while his navy dominated the Mediterranean Sea. He also reformed the legal system, promoted arts and architecture, and oversaw the construction of magnificent mosques and bridges that still stand today.

Under Suleiman, the Ottoman Empire stretched from Hungary to Yemen and from Algeria to Iran, covering over 2 million square miles. It was one of the largest empires in history, controlling major trade routes between Europe, Asia, and Africa.

After Suleiman's death in 1566, the empire gradually began to decline, though it lasted another 350 years until 1922. None of his successors matched his military genius or administrative skills, and European powers slowly gained strength against Ottoman forces.
