Tutankhamun, known as King Tut, is probably the most famous pharaoh today. He became pharaoh at just nine years old and died mysteriously at eighteen. His nearly intact tomb discovered in 1922 contained thousands of treasures, making him incredibly significant to historians and the public.

Pharaohs were absolute rulers who served as both political leaders and religious figures. They commanded the military, made laws, collected taxes, and commissioned massive building projects like pyramids and temples. Egyptians believed pharaohs were living gods chosen to maintain order and protect the kingdom from chaos.

Ancient Egyptian pharaohs ruled for over 3,000 years, from approximately 3100 BCE until Egypt was conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE. This incredible span of time was divided into periods called the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms, each with distinct characteristics.

Pharaohs built pyramids as elaborate tombs to ensure their successful journey to the afterlife. These massive structures required thousands of workers and tons of limestone. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for Pharaoh Khufu, was considered one of the ancient world's seven wonders and took about 20 years to construct.

Pharaohs wore distinctive symbols of power including the false beard, the nemes headdress with the royal cobra (uraeus), and the double crown representing Upper and Lower Egypt united. They also wore gold jewelry, linen clothes, and sandals. These items signaled their divine status and authority to all Egyptians.

Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife, so pharaohs were mummified with their bodies preserved in special wrappings. Tombs were filled with treasures, food, furniture, and even small servant statues called shabtis. Elaborate spells and texts called the Book of the Dead guided pharaohs safely through the underworld.
