Spiders produce silk from special glands called spinnerets located at their abdomen. Different types of silk serve different purposes: some sticky for catching prey, others structural for support. The spider anchors the silk to objects and uses its legs to position each strand with amazing precision and mathematical accuracy.

Webs are hunting tools that allow spiders to catch flying insects without expending energy chasing prey. Once built, the web works 24/7, trapping insects that land on the sticky strands. This passive hunting method is extremely efficient, allowing spiders to eat only when food becomes available.

Spider silk is remarkably strong. Per unit of weight, it's stronger than steel and tougher than many types of armor. Some spider silk is five times stronger than steel of the same thickness. Scientists are studying spider silk to create stronger materials for applications like bulletproof vests and parachutes.

Not all spiders build webs. Some are hunters that stalk and pounce on prey, like jumping spiders or wolf spiders. Others use webs as homes or nurseries rather than hunting tools. Roughly only half of all spider species build webs for catching food.

Building a complete web typically takes 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the web's size and complexity. Many spiders rebuild their webs daily or every few days, sometimes reusing old silk by eating it and recycling the proteins. This efficient process saves the spider energy and resources.

When prey gets trapped, vibrations travel through the web's threads to alert the waiting spider. The spider rushes over, immobilizes the insect with more silk, and may inject venom through its fangs. The venom liquefies the insect's insides, allowing the spider to drink its meal like a smoothie.
