Vampire bats feed exclusively on blood, making them the only mammals that do so. They use special heat-sensing pits on their nose to locate blood vessels near the skin of sleeping animals. Surprisingly, they consume less blood than many people think, typically around a tablespoon per feeding.

Vampire bats have powerful pectoral muscles and flexible wing structures that allow incredible aerial maneuverability. Unlike most bats, they can also run on their hind legs and launch themselves into flight from the ground. This unique adaptation helps them escape quickly when necessary.

Vampire bats are found only in Central and South America, from Mexico to northern Argentina. They prefer warm climates and typically roost in caves, abandoned buildings, or hollow trees. They live in colonies that can number in the thousands, showing complex social behaviors and cooperation.

These bats possess infrared heat sensing to detect warm blood vessels, anticoagulant saliva that prevents blood from clotting, and a special stomach lining that digests blood efficiently. They also communicate with ultrasonic calls and can recognize individual colony members by their unique calls.

Vampire bats are relatively small, weighing only 0.5 to 1.5 ounces with wingspans around 7 inches. Despite their size, they live surprisingly long lives for bats, averaging 9 years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity, showing strong bonds with their mates.

Much of the fear comes from vampire legends and movies rather than reality. While vampire bats rarely bite humans and their bites are usually painless, they can rarely transmit rabies. They're actually fascinating animals that help their ecosystems by controlling insect populations and contributing to seed dispersal.
