A ghost is the spirit of a deceased person, while a ghostly apparition refers specifically to the visible manifestation or appearance of that spirit. Apparitions are the supernatural sightings or visions people report seeing, often described as transparent, glowing, or translucent figures that float through walls or vanish unexpectedly.

The white sheet ghost became popular in the 1800s because white fabric was easy to illustrate and suggested transparency and otherworldliness. However, this iconic image actually comes from burial shrouds and bedsheets used in old ghost stories, eventually becoming the standard ghostly costume seen in Halloween decorations today.

One of the most famous is the ghost of Hamlet's father in Shakespeare's play, which shaped how people imagine apparitions. Other well-known historical cases include the phantom of the opera legend, the haunting of the Tower of London, and countless reported sightings at supposedly haunted castles and mansions across Europe.

Different cultures imagine apparitions uniquely. In Japan, spirits called yurei wear white burial garments with long black hair. Chinese ghosts often appear in traditional clothing, while European apparitions are typically depicted as pale, glowing figures. These differences reflect each culture's beliefs about death, the afterlife, and spiritual appearance.

Scientists suggest several explanations for apparition sightings: infrasound (low-frequency sound) can cause feelings of unease and strange visions, carbon monoxide poisoning causes hallucinations, and pareidolia makes our brains see familiar faces in random patterns, especially in dim lighting.

Artists use techniques like layering translucent shapes, adding glowing highlights, and using cool colors such as blue and white to suggest otherworldly qualities. Soft edges and fading effects create the ethereal quality of apparitions. Shadow and light contrast helps make ghostly figures appear to float mysteriously in space.
