An elephant's trunk contains over 40,000 muscles and serves many purposes. They use it to breathe, smell, touch, grab objects, spray water, communicate with others, and eat. The trunk is sensitive enough to pick up a single blade of grass but strong enough to tear down tree branches.

There are three types of elephants: African bush elephants, African forest elephants, and Asian elephants. African elephants live in savannas, forests, and grasslands across the African continent. Asian elephants inhabit tropical forests in countries like India, Thailand, and Indonesia, preferring wetter environments.

Elephants are herbivores that eat grasses, leaves, bark, fruits, and roots. An adult elephant needs about 200 to 300 pounds of food daily, spending up to 18 hours a day eating. They migrate seasonally to find fresh vegetation and water sources in their habitats.

Wild elephants typically live 60 to 70 years, making them one of the longest-living land mammals. In captivity, they can sometimes live into their 80s. Female elephants often live longer than males, and they pass their knowledge and memories to younger generations.

Baby elephants, called calves, stay with their mothers for 10 to 13 years. Calves learn survival skills, foraging techniques, and social behaviors by watching and imitating older elephants. A newborn calf weighs about 260 pounds and depends completely on its mother and the herd for protection.
