Male peacocks, called peafowl, display their magnificent tails to attract females during mating season. The bright colors and intricate patterns signal health and genetic quality. Interestingly, a peacock's tail contains over 200 feathers and can weigh more than 10 pounds, yet they still manage to move gracefully.

Peacocks are omnivores with diverse diets. They eat insects like crickets and beetles, small reptiles, seeds, berries, and vegetation. In captivity and around human settlements, they readily consume grains, vegetables, and table scraps. They forage by walking through grasslands and forests, pecking at the ground.

Male Indian peacocks are quite large, measuring about 3.5 to 4.5 feet long from beak to tail tip, though their full tail display stretches nearly 6 feet. They weigh between 8 to 13 pounds. Females, called peahens, are smaller at 2.5 to 3 feet long and weigh 6 to 9 pounds.

Indian peacocks originally come from the Indian subcontinent, including India, Sri Lanka, and neighboring regions. They thrive in tropical forests, grasslands, and cultivated areas near water sources. Green peacocks live in Southeast Asia. Today, they've been introduced worldwide in zoos, gardens, and estates.

Peacocks are surprisingly loud birds with distinctive calls. Males produce a loud, piercing 'meow' sound that echoes through forests, which they use to establish territory and attract mates. They also make clicking and cooing sounds. Their vocalizations are actually louder than you might expect from such elegant creatures.

In the wild, peacocks typically live 15 to 20 years. In captivity, where they face fewer predators and have consistent food and medical care, they can live even longer, reaching 25 to 30 years. Females generally live slightly longer than males in captivity.
