The mask features the traditional royal insignia of ancient Egypt. The uraeus (cobra) and the nemes headdress identify him as pharaoh. The false beard signifies divine kingship. The striped nemes headdress in blue and gold was worn exclusively by Egyptian rulers to symbolize their power and divine status.

Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife and buried pharaohs with valuable items they would need in the next world. As a divine ruler, Tutankhamun deserved the finest goods, including the golden mask. This practice reflected both religious beliefs and the immense wealth and power of the Egyptian kingdom during the New Kingdom period.
