Different colors carry different meanings: red symbolizes passionate love, white represents purity, and yellow expresses friendship and joy.

There are over 300 species of wild roses and thousands of cultivated varieties bred by gardeners. Modern garden roses were developed through careful breeding over centuries, combining traits like color, fragrance, size, and disease resistance. Roses range from delicate miniature varieties just inches tall to climbing roses that grow over 20 feet.

Rose fragrance comes from essential oils produced in the flower's petals, particularly concentrated near the base. These oils contain hundreds of different aromatic compounds that create the characteristic sweet scent. Interestingly, some modern roses bred for appearance have lost their natural fragrance, which is why many gardeners still prefer heirloom varieties for their stronger perfume.

Rose stems are technically covered in prickles, not true thorns. The difference is subtle but important: prickles are outgrowths of the outer layer, while thorns are modified leaves or stems. Despite this botanical distinction, most people call them thorns, and they serve an important purpose by protecting the plant from animals that might eat it.

A single rose bloom typically lasts one to two weeks once fully opened, though this varies by variety and conditions. Cut roses in a vase can last one to three weeks with proper care, including fresh water, trimmed stems, and room-temperature surroundings. Wild roses bloom for shorter periods, sometimes just days, while some climbing roses flower for several months.

Roses naturally grow in white, pink, red, yellow, orange, and lavender shades. True blue roses don't exist in nature, though breeders have created blue-tinted varieties through genetic engineering and careful hybridization. Purple and burgundy roses are rare natural colors, while green roses exist but are actually immature blooms that haven't developed full pigmentation.
