Over thousands of years, the waterfall migrates upstream as the harder rock at the top slowly wears away from the constant water impact.

Angel Falls in Venezuela holds the record at 979 meters (3,212 feet) tall. It's so high that water often turns to mist before reaching the ground. The waterfall is named after American pilot Jimmy Angel, who spotted it from his airplane in 1933.

When water falls from great heights and hits rocks or the pool below, the impact breaks it into tiny droplets. These droplets become airborne and create the white mist you see. The mist cools the surrounding air and creates rainbows when sunlight passes through it at the right angle.
