Fun facts about Rainbow Chibi
Rainbows are not actually curved lines in the sky, but rather perfect circles, and you can only see the arc from the ground because the rest of the circle extends below the horizon.
The color indigo, which appears in many rainbow descriptions, is actually so hard to distinguish from blue that modern scientists sometimes question whether it should be considered a separate color in the spectrum.
A rainbow can never appear in the middle of the day when the sun is directly overhead because the sun needs to be lower than 42 degrees above the horizon for a rainbow to be visible.
Butterflies, birds, and some insects can see ultraviolet light beyond what humans perceive, meaning they can see colors in rainbows that are completely invisible to our eyes.
Ancient cultures around the world created myths about rainbows, with some viewing them as bridges to the gods and others seeing them as signs of peace, prosperity, or warnings from nature.
About Rainbow Chibi
How does a rainbow actually form in the sky?
Rainbows form when sunlight enters water droplets in the air, bends as it enters, reflects off the back of the droplet, and bends again as it exits. This bending separates white sunlight into its seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. You need the sun behind you and rain or mist in front of you to see one.
Why does a rainbow always have the same color order?
Each color bends at a slightly different angle when light enters and exits water droplets. Red bends the least, appearing on the outer edge, while violet bends the most, appearing on the inner edge. This same refraction angle happens every time, which is why the color order is always red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Can you ever reach the end of a rainbow?
No, rainbows cannot be reached because they exist only at a specific angle relative to your position and the sun. As you move toward a rainbow, it moves away from you. This is why rainbows always seem to have a pot of gold at the end, which is pure imagination based on this impossible-to-reach phenomenon.
Are double rainbows real, and what causes them?
Yes, double rainbows are real. A secondary rainbow forms when light bounces twice inside water droplets instead of once. The second rainbow appears fainter and with reversed color order, with violet on the outside and red on the inside. The sky between the rainbows appears darker than the sky outside them.
What is the difference between a rainbow and a fogbow?
A fogbow forms when sunlight hits very tiny water droplets in fog instead of rain. Because fog droplets are so small, the colors blend together, making a fogbow appear white or pale instead of colorful. Fogbows are rarer and less vibrant than rainbows but follow the same scientific principles.
Can rainbows appear at times other than after rain?
Yes, rainbows can appear near waterfalls, fountains, or even garden sprinklers on sunny days. Any situation with water droplets suspended in air and sunlight at the right angle can create a rainbow. Some people have even photographed rainbows at night under moonlight, though moonbows are incredibly rare and dim.
