Lightning travels at about one-third the speed of light, reaching speeds of 93,000 miles per second. That's why you see lightning instantly but hear thunder several seconds later. Light travels much faster than sound, so counting the seconds between lightning and thunder helps you estimate how far away the storm is.

Thunder is the sound created when lightning heats the air around it to about 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than the sun's surface. This extreme heat causes the air to expand so rapidly it creates a shock wave that we hear as thunder. The louder the thunder, the closer the lightning strike.

Afternoon thunderstorms are most common because the sun heats the ground all morning, warming the air above it. This warm air rises and creates updrafts that fuel storm development. By late afternoon, this heating effect is strongest, making it the prime time for thunderstorm formation in many regions.

Hail forms inside the tallest thunderstorms called cumulonimbus clouds. Water droplets get caught in powerful updrafts, freeze into ice pellets, and keep bouncing up and down. Each trip adds another layer of ice until the hailstone becomes heavy enough to fall to the ground.

Meteorologists use weather radar, satellite images, and computer models to track moisture, temperature, and wind patterns. When these conditions align just right, a thunderstorm is likely to develop. Modern radar can even detect rotation inside storms that might produce tornadoes, giving communities valuable warning time.

Thunderstorms can be dangerous due to lightning, hail, strong winds, and flash flooding. The safest place during a thunderstorm is indoors, away from windows and electrical appliances. If caught outside, avoid tall objects and open spaces. Never use a phone connected to a cord or take a bath during a thunderstorm.
