Frequently asked
What causes lightning in a thunderstorm?
Lightning forms when ice crystals and water droplets in storm clouds collide, creating electrical charges. Negative charges gather at the cloud's bottom while positive charges build up on the ground. When the electrical difference becomes too strong, a massive electrical discharge called lightning suddenly shoots between the cloud and ground, traveling at speeds exceeding 270,000 miles per hour.
Why do we hear thunder after seeing lightning?
Lightning heats the air around it to about 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit in just microseconds. This extreme heat causes the air to expand so rapidly it creates a shock wave, which is the sound we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound, so we always see lightning before hearing thunder, even though they happen simultaneously.
How do thunderstorms form?
Thunderstorms develop when warm, moist air near Earth's surface is forced upward by heat or weather fronts. As air rises, it cools and water vapor condenses into clouds. Strong updrafts of rising air create towering cumulonimbus clouds that can reach 40,000 feet or higher, generating the conditions needed for lightning, thunder, and heavy rainfall.
