Football cheerleaders perform pyramids, where multiple people create human structures, and basket tosses, where flyers are launched into the air and caught. Safety is paramount in cheerleading. Teams use specialized equipment like crash mats and spotters who watch for mishaps. Traditional football cheerleader uniforms consist of a sleeveless top, skirt or pants in team colors, and school or team logos. Cheerleaders also wear pom-poms, which are waved during routines for visual appeal. Many wear matching hair bows, shoes, and socks to complete their polished, coordinated appearance at games.

Most high school football cheerleading squads have between 12 to 20 members, while college teams often have 30 or more. Squad size depends on the school's resources and cheerleading program level. Larger squads allow for more complex formations and spectacular stunts during halftime shows and sideline cheering.
