Commercial passenger airplanes typically cruise at about 460 to 575 miles per hour, which is nearly the speed of sound. The fastest commercial airplane ever was the Concorde, which could fly at over 1,350 miles per hour, traveling from New York to London in just three and a half hours!

Airplane wings use a special curved shape called an airfoil that creates lift. As the plane moves forward, air flows faster over the top of the wing than underneath it, creating lower pressure above. This pressure difference pushes the wing upward, allowing the entire airplane to fly.

The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, built the first successful airplane in 1903 in North Carolina. Their plane, called the Wright Flyer, flew for only 12 seconds and traveled 120 feet, but it was the first time humans achieved powered, controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine.

Large commercial airplanes, like the Boeing 747, can carry between 300 to 600 passengers depending on how the seats are arranged. The biggest passenger plane ever built, the Airbus A380, can carry up to 853 passengers if all seats are economy class.

Airplanes fly at altitudes where there is very little air and extremely cold temperatures. The cabin must be pressurized with oxygen-rich air so passengers can breathe comfortably. Without pressurization, people would struggle to get enough oxygen and could become very sick.

Propeller airplanes use spinning propellers that push air backward to move forward, while jet airplanes use jet engines that work by burning fuel to create hot, fast-moving exhaust gases. Jets are much faster and can fly higher, making them better for long-distance commercial flights.
