The Montgolfier brothers launched the first untethered hot air balloon flight in 1783 in France, carrying a sheep, duck, and rooster as passengers! Hot air balloons work using a simple physics principle: hot air is less dense than cold air, so it rises. A burner heats the air inside the balloon's envelope, making it buoyant. By controlling the heat intensity, pilots can make the balloon climb higher or descend lower for controlled flight.

The highest recorded hot air balloon flight reached 68,986 feet in 1978! Modern record attempts aim even higher. Commercial passenger balloons typically fly between 2,000 and 4,000 feet, offering spectacular views while remaining comfortable and safe for everyone aboard.
