The Space Shuttle launched vertically like a rocket with two solid boosters and an external fuel tank, then orbited Earth in space. To land, it fired engines to slow down, re-entered the atmosphere, and glided to a runway like an airplane. This made it the first reusable spacecraft design.

The Space Shuttle carried astronauts and cargo to low Earth orbit, typically to the International Space Station. It deployed satellites, conducted scientific experiments, and performed repair missions like servicing the Hubble Space Telescope. No spacecraft before had such diverse capabilities.

A typical Space Shuttle crew included seven astronauts: two pilots and five mission specialists or payload specialists. The cargo bay could hold up to 65,000 pounds of equipment and supplies. Five Space Shuttles flew operational missions during the program's 30-year history.

The Space Shuttle was revolutionary because it was the first partially reusable spacecraft. Unlike previous capsules that splashed down in water, the Shuttle glided to a runway and could be used again. This promised cheaper space access, though the program was complex and expensive.

The Space Shuttle program ended in 2011 after 135 missions. NASA retired the five operational orbiters: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour. Today they're displayed in museums where visitors can see these incredible machines up close.

During re-entry, the Space Shuttle's nose cone reached temperatures of 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,650 Celsius), hotter than the surface of the sun. Special heat-resistant tiles protected the spacecraft from this extreme heat, preventing it from burning up in the atmosphere.
