The Space Shuttle was the first reusable spacecraft, launched in 1981. Unlike earlier rockets that were used only once, shuttles could fly multiple missions. A Space Shuttle has three main components: the Orbiter (the shuttle itself where astronauts sit), the External Tank (holds fuel), and two Solid Rocket Boosters (provide extra power at launch). The Orbiter has a cargo bay door where it carries satellites and equipment into space and back to Earth.

Space Shuttles reach incredible speeds of about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour) when in orbit around Earth. At this speed, astronauts complete one full orbit around our planet in just 90 minutes. This makes them fast enough to escape Earth's gravity while staying close enough to observe our world.

A Space Shuttle crew typically included seven astronauts: the commander, pilot, and five mission specialists. These specialists conducted scientific experiments, deployed satellites, and performed spacewalks. Some missions had slightly different crew compositions depending on mission objectives and requirements.

The Space Shuttle's flat, winged design allowed it to glide back through Earth's atmosphere and land like an airplane, rather than splashing down in the ocean. This design made it reusable and allowed it to carry large cargo like satellites and telescope parts. The distinctive look made it instantly recognizable.

NASA built five Space Shuttles that actually flew to space: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour. The program operated from 1981 to 2011, completing 135 missions. Each shuttle flew multiple times and helped accomplish incredible achievements in space exploration and scientific research.
