Most submarines used by navies can dive between 300 and 600 meters deep. However, special research submarines called bathyscaphes can descend much further. The record holder reached nearly 11,000 meters in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in any ocean on Earth.

Submarines rely on sonar, which uses sound waves to detect objects underwater instead of light. Active sonar sends out sound waves and listens for echoes, while passive sonar listens for sounds made by other submarines or ships. This is similar to how bats use echolocation to navigate in darkness.

Submarines generate oxygen using special machines that break water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, or they carry pressurized oxygen tanks called liquid oxygen reserves. Carbon dioxide produced by crew members is removed using chemical scrubbers containing substances that absorb the gas safely.

Military submarines are designed for defense, stealth, and carrying weapons, while research submarines prioritize scientific observation and equipment. Civilian submarines are smaller and slower, focusing on deep-sea exploration, underwater tourism, and studying ocean life and geology.

Submarines use ballast tanks that fill with water to sink and release water to rise. By carefully controlling how much water enters different tanks, submarines maintain perfect balance at any depth. This system is so precise that submarines can hover motionless underwater like floating objects.

The first practical submarine was built in 1897 by Irish inventor John Philip Holland. The first submarine to sink an enemy ship was the USS Holland during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Today, submarines are among the most advanced military vessels, capable of staying underwater for months.
