Submarines can dive to different depths depending on their design. Military submarines typically reach 300 to 500 meters deep, while special research submarines called bathyspheres can dive over 10,000 meters into the Mariana Trench. The deepest any submarine has gone is nearly 11,000 meters, exploring Earth's most extreme underwater environments.

Submarines use special tanks called ballast tanks to control their buoyancy. When the crew wants to dive, they fill these tanks with water, making the submarine heavier so it sinks. To surface, they pump compressed air into the ballast tanks to push the water out, making the submarine lighter so it floats back up.

A periscope is a tube with mirrors and lenses that allows submarine crews to see above the water surface while staying submerged. It's incredibly useful for observing ships, taking photographs, and navigating safely. Modern submarines use electronic periscopes with cameras instead of traditional optical ones.

Submarines use sophisticated sonar technology to navigate the dark depths. Sonar sends sound waves through water and listens for echoes bouncing off objects like rocks, fish, and other submarines. This allows crews to create a detailed map of their surroundings without needing light, similar to how bats use echolocation.

Submarines have air regeneration systems that remove carbon dioxide and create fresh oxygen. The crew breathes recycled air that's continuously cleaned and refreshed by special chemical processes. Modern submarines can stay underwater for weeks because of these advanced life support systems.

Round or cylindrical hulls are the strongest shape to withstand the enormous pressure of deep water. The pressure underwater increases dramatically with depth, so the curved hull distributes this pressure evenly around the entire structure, preventing the submarine from being crushed.
