Most ancient Chinese villages were built near rivers like the Yellow River and Yangtze River for fresh water and fertile soil. Villages were also strategically placed in valleys protected by mountains, with terraced fields carved into hillsides for rice farming.

Traditional Chinese village houses were built with wood frames, clay bricks, and distinctive curved tile roofs. Wealthy families had courtyard homes called siheyuan, while common farmers lived in simpler single-story houses with thatched or tile roofs.

Some Chinese villages date back over 4,000 years! The village of Hongcun in Anhui province has existed for nearly 900 years, while archaeological evidence shows organized farming communities existed along Chinese rivers since 3000 BCE.

Most villagers were rice or wheat farmers, but communities also had blacksmiths, pottery makers, silk weavers, tea growers, and merchants. Villages often specialized in particular crafts like porcelain making, bamboo weaving, or traditional medicine preparation.

Village life revolved around farming seasons, family traditions, and community festivals. Families lived together in multi-generational homes, children helped with farming from a young age, and evenings were spent sharing stories, playing traditional games, or practicing calligraphy.

Chinese villages featured distinctive upturned roof corners to ward off evil spirits, feng shui layouts for harmony with nature, central courtyards for family gatherings, and ornate wooden carvings. Many had protective walls and traditional moon gates as entrances.
