About Terracotta Warriors
Where were the Terracotta Warriors discovered?
The Terracotta Warriors were found near Xi'an, China in 1974 by local farmers digging a well. They're located close to the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor who unified the country over 2,200 years ago.
How many Terracotta Warriors have been found?
Archaeologists have uncovered over 8,000 individual warrior figures so far, plus 130 chariots and 670 horses. However, experts believe thousands more remain buried underground, waiting to be discovered and excavated.
Why were the Terracotta Warriors created?
Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the creation of this clay army to protect him in the afterlife. Ancient Chinese people believed the emperor would need soldiers, horses, and weapons in death just like in life.
Are all the Terracotta Warriors identical?
No! Each warrior has unique facial features, expressions, and hairstyles. Archaeologists believe the sculptors used real soldiers as models, creating thousands of individual portraits rather than mass-produced identical figures.
What colors were the Terracotta Warriors originally?
The warriors were originally painted in bright colors including pink skin, black hair, brown eyes, and colorful uniforms. Unfortunately, exposure to air caused most paint to fade away within hours of excavation.
How tall are the Terracotta Warriors?
Most warrior figures stand between 5.7 and 6.5 feet tall, roughly the same height as real ancient Chinese soldiers. The generals are taller at around 6.5 feet, while cavalry soldiers are slightly shorter at 5.7 feet.
