About Parthenon Temple

Where exactly is the Parthenon located?

The Parthenon sits on top of the Acropolis, a rocky hill 490 feet above Athens, Greece. You can see it from almost anywhere in the modern city below, just as ancient Athenians could 2,400 years ago.

When was the Parthenon built and how long did it take?

Construction began in 447 BCE and took just 15 years to complete, finishing in 432 BCE. This was incredibly fast for such a massive project, showing the skill of ancient Greek builders and craftsmen.

What happened to the Parthenon's famous sculptures?

Many original sculptures were removed in the early 1800s by Lord Elgin and are now in the British Museum in London. Greece continues to request their return in an ongoing international debate.

Why does the Parthenon look perfectly straight when it's actually curved?

Greek architects used optical illusions called entasis, slightly curving columns and floors upward. Without these curves, the building would appear to sag in the middle to human eyes.

What caused the most damage to the Parthenon over time?

A massive explosion in 1687 caused the worst damage when Venetian forces attacked Ottoman troops using the building as a gunpowder storage. War and pollution have hurt it more than natural aging.

What was the giant statue inside the Parthenon like?

The 40-foot-tall statue of Athena was made of gold and ivory, created by famous sculptor Phidias. Worth millions today, it disappeared in ancient times and we only know it from descriptions and small copies.
