About Gecko

How do geckos walk on walls and ceilings?

Geckos have millions of microscopic hairs called setae on their toe pads that use molecular forces to stick to any surface. Each foot has about 500,000 of these tiny hairs that can support the gecko's entire body weight upside down.

Why do geckos lose their tails?

Geckos drop their tails as a defense mechanism when grabbed by predators. The detached tail continues to wiggle, distracting the threat while the gecko escapes. Most species can regrow a new tail within a few months.

What do geckos eat in the wild?

Most geckos are insectivores, eating crickets, moths, beetles, and spiders. Larger species may consume small birds, eggs, or fruit. They're excellent pest controllers, with one gecko eating thousands of insects per year.

How big do geckos get?

Gecko sizes vary dramatically by species. The tiny dwarf gecko measures only 0.6 inches long, while the New Caledonian giant gecko can reach 14 inches. Most common house geckos are 3 to 6 inches long.

Do all geckos make sounds?

Many gecko species are quite vocal, making chirping, clicking, or barking sounds to communicate. The tokay gecko's loud call sounds like 'to-kay,' giving it its name. However, some species are completely silent.

Where do geckos live around the world?

Geckos inhabit every continent except Antarctica, thriving in tropical and subtropical regions. They live in rainforests, deserts, mountains, and cities. Many species have adapted to living alongside humans in houses and buildings.
