About Snake

How do snakes move without legs?

Snakes use four main types of movement: serpentine (side-to-side curves), rectilinear (straight-line belly muscle contractions), concertina (accordion-like bunching), and sidewinding for sandy surfaces. Their flexible spine has up to 400 vertebrae, twice as many as humans.

What do snakes eat and how do they swallow large prey?

Most snakes are carnivores eating rodents, birds, eggs, fish, or insects. Their jaws can unhinge and stretch dramatically, allowing them to swallow prey much larger than their head. They have backward-curved teeth to prevent escape.

Are all snakes venomous?

Only about 600 of the world's 3,000+ snake species are venomous. Most snakes are completely harmless to humans. Venomous snakes use their poison primarily for hunting prey, not defense, and prefer to avoid human contact whenever possible.

How do snakes shed their skin?

Snakes shed their entire outer skin layer in one piece, like peeling off a sock, every few months as they grow. The process is called ecdysis and starts when their eyes turn milky blue, indicating the old skin is ready to come off.

How long do snakes live?

Snake lifespans vary greatly by species. Smaller snakes might live 5 to 10 years, while larger species like pythons and boas can live 20 to 30 years or more. The oldest recorded snake in captivity lived to be over 40 years old.

Can snakes hear sounds?

Snakes don't have external ears, but they can detect vibrations through their jawbones and feel sound waves through the ground. They're much better at sensing movement and heat than hearing airborne sounds like music or voices.
