Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch artist who became one of the most important pioneers of abstract art. He developed his famous grid-based style in the 1920s and spent his later years in Paris, London, and New York City.

Mondrian co-founded De Stijl (meaning 'The Style'), a Dutch art movement that promoted pure abstraction using only horizontal and vertical lines, right angles, and primary colors plus black, white, and gray.

Mondrian believed primary colors (red, blue, yellow) were pure and universal, representing fundamental truths. He thought mixing colors created impurity, so he used only primaries plus black, white, and gray in his mature works.

Mondrian's geometric style influenced architecture, fashion, furniture, and graphic design. The Bauhaus school adopted his principles, and his aesthetic appears in everything from building facades to clothing patterns and logos today.

Mondrian was inspired by theosophy, a spiritual philosophy seeking universal truths. He believed abstract geometric forms could express spiritual reality better than realistic images, gradually eliminating curves and natural forms from his work.

His most famous work is 'Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow' (1930), featuring his signature black grid with blocks of primary colors. This painting perfectly represents his mature style and philosophical approach to art.
