Strawberries grow from low-lying plants that spread along the ground using runners, or stolons. These runners create new plants that eventually produce flowers and bright red fruits. A mature strawberry patch can have dozens of plants clustered together, creating a dense, productive growing area perfect for harvesting fresh strawberries.

Strawberries turn red as they ripen, developing natural sugars that make them sweet and delicious. The red color comes from anthocyanin pigments that also indicate ripeness. A fully ripe strawberry will be bright red throughout, sweet to the taste, and packed with more vitamin C than an orange of similar size.

From planting to first harvest, strawberries typically take about 4 to 6 weeks to produce fruit. However, establishing a healthy patch that produces abundant berries takes planning. Spring-planted strawberries often produce their first crop in early summer, with peak production continuing through late summer and early fall.

Unlike most fruits, strawberries have their tiny seeds on the outside of the flesh rather than inside. These seeds, called achenes, cover the entire red surface of the fruit. Each strawberry can have between 200 and 500 seeds, and they're completely edible and nutritious to eat.

Strawberries thrive in sunny locations with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. They prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter and consistent moisture. Good air circulation around plants helps prevent disease, and proper spacing prevents overcrowding while allowing each plant to produce maximum fruit.

Caring for strawberries involves regular watering, removing dead leaves and runners, and occasional fertilizing throughout the growing season. Gardeners also remove flowers in the first year to encourage plant strength rather than fruit production. Mulching around plants keeps fruit clean and helps retain soil moisture during hot weather.
