Knights emerged during the Early Medieval period, around the 9th century, and remained prominent through the 17th century. The peak of knighthood was during the High and Late Medieval periods, roughly 1000 to 1400 CE, when they dominated European warfare and society. Armor and tactics evolved significantly throughout these centuries.

A complete suit of plate armor typically weighed between 45 to 55 pounds (20 to 25 kilograms), contrary to popular myth. Knights were actually quite mobile in their armor because the weight distributed evenly across their body. They trained from childhood to move efficiently in full plate, making them formidable warriors.

The Code of Chivalry was an unwritten set of values emphasizing honor, loyalty, bravery, and protection of the weak. Knights swore oaths to serve their lords, defend the church, and treat nobles and ladies with respect. This code shaped knight behavior and was central to medieval culture and identity.

Becoming a knight required years of training starting in childhood as a page and squire, typically for nobles or wealthy families. Young men learned combat, horsemanship, and courtly manners until age 21, when they underwent a formal ceremony called dubbing. This ritual officially granted them knighthood and all its privileges and responsibilities.

Knights wielded swords, lances, maces, and axes as primary weapons, depending on the era and situation. The long lance was crucial for mounted combat, while swords served in close-quarters fighting. Knights also carried shields for defense, and some used crossbows or bows, though these were less prestigious than melee weapons.

Knights became obsolete due to technological advances, particularly the widespread use of firearms, cannons, and pike formations. Gunpowder made expensive armor less effective, and professional standing armies replaced feudal levies. By the 17th century, knights were mostly ceremonial figures rather than active warriors in battle.
