Chivalry was the medieval knight's code of conduct emphasizing honor, courage, loyalty, and respect for the weak. Knights promised to protect ladies, fight fairly in battle, serve their lord faithfully, and show mercy to defeated enemies. This romantic ideal shaped knight culture throughout the Middle Ages and remains legendary today.

Becoming a knight was a lengthy process taking 10 to 15 years of training. Boys started as young pages at age 7, learning manners and basic skills. Around age 14, they became squires, training intensively in combat, horsemanship, and weaponry under an experienced knight before finally earning their knighthood.

Medieval armor protected knights from swords, arrows, and lances during battle. Early armor was simple leather, but later knights wore full plate armor made of steel, which could weigh 45 to 55 pounds. Though heavy, the metal distributed weight evenly across the body, allowing skilled knights to move and fight effectively in combat.

Some legendary knights include King Arthur, who may have been a real British leader, and Sir Lancelot from medieval legends. Historical knights like Sir William Marshal, called 'the greatest knight that ever lived,' served English kings and became incredibly wealthy and influential through skill and loyalty.

Knights' horses, called destriers, underwent years of specialized training to handle the chaos of medieval warfare. Trainers taught them to charge on command, obey while armored riders directed them, and remain calm during loud battle sounds. A well-trained destrier was as valuable as the knight riding it.

The knight's golden age declined during the 1400s and 1500s as gunpowder weapons became more common and effective in warfare. Firearms could pierce armor that sword blasts couldn't penetrate, making heavily armored cavalry less practical. However, the romantic ideal of knighthood lives on in stories, legends, and our imaginations today.
