Spartan warriors dominated ancient Greece from around 900 BCE until 371 BCE, when they were defeated at the Battle of Leuctra. At their peak during the Classical period (5th to 4th century BCE), Spartans were considered the most powerful military force in Greece and influenced Western warfare for generations.

Spartan boys began military training called agoge at age 7 and continued until age 30. This brutal system taught combat skills, survival, discipline, and obedience. Boys lived in military barracks, trained with minimal food and clothing, and underwent harsh physical tests to forge them into undefeated soldiers.

Spartans carried a short sword called a xiphos, a spear, and a large round shield called an aspis decorated with the Greek letter lambda. They wore bronze helmets, breastplates, and leg protection called greaves. Their simple but effective equipment made them deadly in close combat formations.

Spartans believed that dying honorably for their city-state was better than living in shame. This cultural value, combined with intense training from childhood, created warriors who showed almost no fear. They fought in tight formations where retreat meant dishonor, making them incredibly difficult opponents to defeat.

The phalanx was a tight military formation where soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder with overlapping shields and long spears. This defensive wall was nearly impossible to break through. Spartans perfected this formation and used it to dominate ancient battles across Greece and beyond.

Spartan military dominance ended in 371 BCE at the Battle of Leuctra when they were defeated by Thebes. Later, the rise of Macedonia and Rome shifted power away from Greek city-states. By the 1st century BCE, Sparta had become a minor city with little political or military influence.
