Unlike most ancient Greek women, Spartan women had unusual freedom and education. They exercised regularly, owned property, and could speak their minds. Spartan society valued strong mothers who would raise brave warriors, giving women more independence and respect than in other Greek city-states.

The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE was Sparta's most famous fight. Three hundred Spartan warriors held off thousands of Persian soldiers for days, becoming legendary heroes. Though they ultimately lost, their courage inspired all of Greece to resist the Persian invasion successfully.
