A carved pumpkin typically lasts 5 to 10 days before rotting begins, depending on temperature and humidity. Cooler weather extends its lifespan significantly. To preserve your jack o lantern longer, keep it outside in cool temperatures, avoid direct sunlight, and apply petroleum jelly to cut edges to slow decay.

Pumpkins are harvested in late October, making them naturally available during Halloween season. Their large size, sturdy flesh, and hollow interior make them ideal for carving detailed designs.
