Zombies vary significantly across media: some are slow and mindless, others are fast and tactical. Some retain human intelligence, while others are purely instinct-driven. These differences let creators explore different aspects of the zombie concept.

Zombie makeup works because it mimics decay, disease, and death through pale skin, dark eye shadows, and exposed wounds. Tattered clothing suggests violence and suffering. This combination triggers primal fear responses, making zombies instantly recognizable as 'wrong' or dangerous. Strategic makeup placement can create surprisingly convincing effects.

While true zombies don't exist, some real diseases inspired zombie fiction. Rabies causes aggressive behavior and death, while certain parasites control host animal behavior. The fungus Ophiocordyceps even makes insects climb high before dying. These biological anomalies show nature can create disturbing changes in living creatures.

Zombies appeal to our fear of death, loss of humanity, and apocalyptic scenarios. They're versatile enough to represent society's problems, individual anxieties, or pure survival horror. Unlike vampires or werewolves, zombies are slow enough that humans can theoretically survive them, making them relatable threats that spark both fear and imagination.
