Mars rovers are solar-powered robots equipped with wheels, cameras, and scientific instruments. NASA's Curiosity rover, which landed in 2012, is among the most successful. Perseverance, which arrived in 2021, is hunting for signs of ancient microbial life and collecting samples for future return to Earth.

Mars rovers are designed for specific missions, often planned for two to three years. However, many exceed expectations dramatically. Spirit operated for six years before getting stuck in sand, while Opportunity lasted 14 years, far surpassing its original mission timeline through careful engineering and dust-cleaning events.

Engineers must overcome extreme cold (minus 125 degrees Celsius), dust storms that last months, and a thin atmosphere. The rovers need wheels tough enough for rocky terrain yet light enough to not sink into sand. Communication delays mean rovers must be semi-autonomous, making decisions without waiting for Earth instructions.

Rovers use cameras, lasers, and computer vision to navigate autonomously across Martian terrain. They identify obstacles, plan routes to avoid hazards, and move slowly and carefully. Scientists on Earth also provide general directions, creating maps and identifying interesting geological features worthy of investigation.

Future Mars rovers will likely be much larger to accommodate human explorers during manned missions planned for the 2030s and 2040s. These pressurized vehicles will provide protection from radiation and extreme temperatures while allowing astronauts to travel greater distances than they could on foot across the harsh Martian landscape.
